What Is AI Character Chat? A Beginner’s Guide
AI character chat is interactive fiction where you write your half and a language model writes the other half, in character. There are no dialogue trees. What you type is what happens next — which is exactly why the habits below matter.
It is not a choice-based game
Most people arrive expecting buttons. There are none. The character has a written personality, a backstory, and a situation, and the model improvises from that plus everything you have said so far.
That freedom is the whole appeal, and it is also why two people can start from the same character and end up with completely different stories.
Write actions and dialogue differently
The common convention is quotation marks for speech and asterisks for action:
- "You’re late." — dialogue
- *She checks her watch without looking up.* — action or description
- Mixing both in one message gives the model a scene instead of a line
Be specific about the scene, not just the feeling
"I'm sad" gives the model almost nothing. "I sit on the stairwell steps because I do not want anyone in the office to see my face" gives it a place, a reason, and a physical state to react to.
Concrete detail is the single biggest difference between a flat exchange and a scene you remember.
Long stories drift — steer early
After enough turns, models start to lose the thread: a detail from twenty messages ago quietly changes. This is normal and easy to correct.
- Restate anything important in passing — "since you moved into the apartment upstairs…"
- Mark scene changes explicitly — a new time or place resets the frame
- If a reply goes wrong, regenerate it instead of arguing with it in-story
Things AI chat is not good for
A model will state wrong facts with total confidence. It is not a source for medical, legal, or financial questions, and a character being warm is not the same as a person being there. Keep personal details out of the conversation.
